AI and the Workforce: Where Automation Is Happening First

New research from AI company Anthropic is offering one of the clearest pictures yet of how artificial intelligence is actually changing the labor market. By analyzing millions of real interactions between workers and its AI system Claude, the study tracked which occupations are already seeing the most AI involvement. The results suggest that AI is first disrupting jobs built around digital, text-based, and data-heavy tasks. Roles such as computer programmers, customer service representatives, and data entry specialists top the list, with AI already capable of handling large portions of their daily work. In some cases, the research estimates that AI can perform around 70–75% of the tasks involved in these roles, particularly tasks like coding assistance, responding to common support requests, and processing structured information.
The broader pattern is that AI is not replacing entire occupations overnight, but rather automating pieces of them. Many jobs are being “fragmented,” where AI handles routine tasks while humans focus on oversight, complex decision-making, or creative work. In fact, nearly half of jobs now include tasks where AI can assist with at least a quarter of the work involved. The roles most exposed include programming, medical recordkeeping, market research, sales analysis, and financial analysis—professions that rely heavily on analyzing information, producing written content, or working with digital systems. Meanwhile, jobs that require physical activity, hands-on work, or face-to-face interaction such as construction, maintenance, or hospitality—remain far less vulnerable for now.
